I can't reproduce the problem Jérôme.
The references diplayed in [1] do not have "and et al." although they
are generated by bibtex.
I also had these references included in standard latex toolchains and it
never gave "and et al.".
The problem is to fix on your side it seems. How are you compiling?
Which bibtex style?

It appears with "et al." using the DOI
