I added that check recently, getting crashes with new Catalyst drivers from ATI, and it was not needed anymore. Crash in glGetErro is rather suprising, but it is not needed. (I ditched crappy catalyst (fglrx) driver in favor of the open-source radeon driver, which works just fine including 3d accel)
