Luc Sibille proposed the following answer:
Hi,
In my opinion formula 3 in the paper is misleading, it give the relative
velocity u between the two particles (including a normal un and a
tangential/shear component us), but not directly the shear relative velocity.
To find the shear componant you need to project u on the normal to the contact
to find the normal component, and then substract this normal relative velocity
to the total one u, to finally obtain the shear component.
The different steps are detailed here:
https://yade-dem.org/doc/formulation.html#shear-strain
Best,
Luc
