Jérôme Duriez proposed the following answer:
Hi,

Assuming your timestep comes from GlobalStiffnessTimeStepper engine (it would
have been very useful to precise), the time step depends on the contact
stiffnesses and the particles masses (hence indeed the granulometry), as
explained in this part of the doc:
https://yade-dem.org/doc/formulation.html#stability-considerations

Then, you have different possibilities:

- reduce the elastic parameters (contact stiffnesses) if possible, i.e.
if these parameters do not affect your study

- increase the masses e.g. increasing density (search for "density
scaling" in the DEM litterature) if your analysis conforms quasistatic
conditions and inertia does not come into picture

- if none of these two solutions apply, probably you just have to live
with it (or buy another computer)
