Bruno Chareyre proposed the following answer: The harmonic average is simply what comes out after cumulating the compliance of two surfaces, as explained here: https://yade-dem.org/doc/formulation.html#normal-stiffness It does not mean that every experiment on every possible contact will give this, but it is at least self-consistent.
