Consistently save exception object in the code during reraise

Bug description:
There are many places in the code where an exception object in the current
context
is reraised with a plain "raise".
In other places, the object is specified with raise, i.e "raise exc".
It'll be good to cleanly and consistently use the same style throughout the
code by saving the exception
object for re-raise, like so:
except Exception as e:
...
raise e
