VMware: unable to boot an instance from .vmdk on ESX 5.1 host

Bug description:
OpenStack Nova shows everything is OK when I boot an instance from an
.vmdk image. Unfortunately, when I log on the ESX 5.1 host with
vSphere client and check the terminal for this instance, it shows
"Operating System not found". This is a similar issue as it is
described in this link

The nova-compute node and the ESX 5.1 host are in the same LAN. I have
tried both FlatManager and FlatDHCPManager as the network manager, but
neither works.
