Allow building doc using make latexpdf

Bug description:
Some unicode symbol characters that causes make pdflatex fail staring
with ther error message:
! Package inputenc Error: Unicode char \u8:└ not set up for use with
LaTeX.
The offending characters can be converted to ascii ones with almost no
loss of information or the latex tool chain need to be reconfigured
(not sure how).
The former is a more pragmatic solution and I will propose a patch.
