Prior to Newton, instance snapshots were displayed in the image list as
having a type of "snapshot". This would allow you to distinguish between
a base "image", and an instance "snapshots".
As of Newton, instance snapshots are incorrectly displaying as having a
type of "image", even though their properties indicate "image_type:
snapshot".
