Sounds more like an internet connection problem. Do you have a firewall that might be blocking some of the necessary ports for YM to work? Are you using a wireless internet connection? Is it your own or a Wi-Fi spot?
Have you gone into your Preferences and checked how you have your internet connection preferences set up on YM? If it's not any of the above, you can go to your Add/Remove programs and choose Remove for YM. Then choose the repair option, rather than the remove option. Sometimes this will fix some things.
