Usually these kinds of problems are related to internet connection issues.
YM is "sensitive" to dropped packets, etc. It could also be firewall
related if your firewall is not letting YM into and out of all of the ports
that it wants to connect through. Are you using a dial up internet
connection or wireless internet connection?

I also understand that the new 8.xx version of YM has some quirks that have
yet to be worked out so it could always be one of these quirks as well.

On a side note...

I usually keep the older version running on my computers until I quit seeing
messages from people having problems, then I allow YM to upgrade. I still
am running version 7.5x with no plans to update since it works great for me.

One thing I suggest to anyone running an older version or the new 8.xx
version, and if it's working good for you... is to go into your Yahoo
Messenger Program folder (C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger) and rename the
file "yupdater.exe" to something else. I usually rename mine
"yupdater-OLD.exe" and just leave it in the same folder. Some people
actually move it to somewhere in their My Documents folder but I haven't
found that to be necessary. This will stop YM from automatically updating
to the newer versions or any other updates that Yahoo tries to shove down
your throat. Remember if you ever do decide to update, after the update,
rename the yupdater.exe file again to prevent automatic updates by Yahoo.

If you need more help with doing this, write back.

Hi,

I just got a new computer. Yahoo Messenger worked great on my old
computer, but it gives me problems on the new computer.

Messenger signs out and back in while I'm using it, over and over few
minutes or so.

I currently live in Shanghai, China, and my computer's time is set for
China. My old computer was set on Indiana time. Could this be the problem?
Any ideas to help me would be truly appreciated. Yahoo Messenger is my
lifeline to my children and other family back home.

  Thanks!

  Debra

I too, have the same problem. Brand new laptop with Windows XP Media
Edition. My old laptop had just XP. I think it is the media edition that
is causing problems.
