This also happens when the sending person is on a slow internet connection like dial-up. YM sends through a thumbnail type image, which is the "blurry" image that you can see right away, but it takes a really long time for the full picture to come through. If they send multiple pictures at once on a slow internet connection, it simply bogs things down since those packets are going to take a back seat to other internet activity.
Instead of doing the photo sharing feature, have them send each pic individually using the file sending feature. They you will see the "blue bar" showing the picture downloading to your computer and it will notify you when it is done. Also, ask the sender what size are the pictures? If they are large 1MB files instead of smaller 25-50kb files, they will take 20-40X's longer... for each picture. Also, tell the sender to NOT do any other activity on their computer that involves the internet, such as web surfing or sending emails, so that the pictures will have access to the full upload bandwidth. You can still chat since sending IM's uses very little upload bandwidth.
