I haven't seen this posted out here in a while so I thought I would provide the information again. So many problems with YM are a result of people "upgrading" to a new version and then the new version still has some bugs for many people.
I NEVER allow YM to upgrade on it's own. I decide what happens on my computer. I do not allow any of my programs to auto-upgrade. It's a little more work for me to have to do it manually but it keeps my system stable. It's not Yahoo's fault. I'm sure they Beta test the heck out of new versions but there are simply so many variables on the millions of computers out there that no software can be tested until it will be fully compatible with every system. Every piece of software has bugs once it comes out of Beta and is introduced into the full market place. Now, here is the information that I referenced in the subject line: Using Windows Explorer, or your preferred method, browse to the following folder... C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger. Then locate the file named yupdater.exe. That is the "Update" file for YM. Right click on that file and rename it. I always call mine "OLD-yupdater.exe" Once you do that, it effectively neuters YM's attempts to update itself. This is done by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people, and does not affect the operation of YM. I've been doing it this way for 10 years on many versions of YM. When I see that the new version has become stable... usually 6 months to a year after it's public release, then I may go back and rename the OLD-yupdater.exe file back to yupdater.exe and let it do it's thing... or I may do a complete uninstall and then reinstall the new version into a cleaned Yahoo! Messenger folder. I wrote about how to do this in a recent message out here. Many people who are security conscious would routinely block this yupdater.exe file, using their firewalls to prevent YM from "phoning home". Some people consider any program that stays in constant contact with the manufacturer to be some sort of spyware. If you have a decent firewall, you will routinely see yupdater.exe using your internet connect to contact Yahoo... and I mean every time you use your YM program. Most other "updater" features on other programs only "phone home" to check for updates on a weekly or monthly basis. Since YM updater does it every time, this is what leads many to be suspicious of the function. Remember.. after you update to a new version, you need to browse to the yupdater.exe file and change the file name again to stop the program from "phoning home" and trying to automatically update itself. If your YM is a newer version and starts acting buggy, you may want to allow yupdater.exe to check for an update... maybe a fix was issued by Yahoo... and then change it back to "OLD" again. Or you can go to http://messenger.yahoo.com and see if there is a "new" version that is a higher decimal number over your version. Hope this helps.
