Hi Dave,

As I said in my previous post, the problem with allowing YM to upgrade on
it's own is the many, many, many problems that it sometimes causes on
thousands of computers that previously were working fine. That is one of
the reasons why the group exists... to help people through those problems.

The overwhelming majority of problems that I see in this group and others on
the internet, are people having issues and bugs from the "newest" version
they just GOT upgraded to... maybe without really wanting it. I still have
7.5 and did not upgrade to 7.5 until it was out for several months so that
all of the bugs could be worked out that were not fixed in the Beta testing.
My YM 7.5 works GREAT and rarely has a bug or hiccup... and when it does,
it's more likely to be Yahoo Server issues rather than the YM program on my
computer.

I just spent several hours working with a family member that had the newest
YM version causing all kinds of problems for them. We cleaned it out,
cleaned out the registry and installed the "old" version 7.5 and their
computer and YM are working fine again.

As far as the "phone home" issue... the only programs on my computer.. out
of the hundreds that I have... that needs to check for updates everyday are
my Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs... both security related. NONE of
my other programs NEED to phone home every day looking for updates. Why
does yupdater.exe need to do this every time someone connects to the
internet and then stays connected the entire time. I have verified this
with my firewall on previous versions. Yupdater.exe stays connected through
a port the entire time that YM is operating. Even my AV and AS programs
only phone home once a day to look for updated definition files.

I'm not saying that everyone HAS to do what I suggested but for people that
want to take control of their computers and prevent the headaches that
happens when YM updates itself, that option exists for them using the
OLD-yupdater.exe option. When I quit seeing so many problems related to
8.0.xx, I'll probably upgrade to it as well.

Lenny, I want everyone including you to understand that yupdater really only
handles updates. It can update itself to add additional functionality, and
it also checks for updates available to the client software. It doesn't
"phone home" or do anything outside of the general task of keeping your
software up-to-date. It runs every time you sign-in, and it does so out of
necessity. In the extremely unlikely case that a sever security
vulnerability is found and exploited in a version of Messenger, there has to
be a way to get a new version with a fix out to everyone before they sign in
and open themselves up to the risk.

FWIW, Yahoo! Messenger application itself handles all of the non-update
transmissions - status updates from people on your friends' list, incoming
IMs, alerts. Of course this is all covered in the Privacy Policy that you
agreed to when you installed the software:
http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/messenger/details.html

FWIW, I recommend you simply leave the updater alone. Then you won't have to
worry about changing names back and forth, and you won't be stuck if a truly
critical update is released.

.Dave
