Are you using Internet Explorer as your web browser? If so, what version (IE Menu, Help, About)? Also, check which version of Java that you have (State Menu>Control Panel>Java>General Tab, About Button)?
I have IE7 and Java-1.5.0_10-b03 and it just worked for me by going to http://messenger.yahoo.com and then at the bottom of the page, clicking Launch Web Messenger... but I know when I first upgraded my Java to version ...10, it would not work.
