Hey Vicky, You did nothing wrong! When you add a friend to your contact list, your friend has to consent to being on your messenger list. If the friend is online, this happens almost immediately. If your friend is not online, he/she gets a notification that you want to add him/her to your messenger once they come online (sign in to the messenger).
