Hi Lenny.....thanks for all the info.

You are correct in assuming I download the small 400+kb program that then
points me to the other downloaded main program on the Yahoo website.I will try
and get it sepreately from the "filehippo" site.

I'll let you know how it goes.

OK. Then you did the download/run option on the self-installer version of
YM, rather than just the download of the FULL version. There are two ways
to download and install YM. One is where you download a small
self-installer .exe file and when executed, it will go online and do as you
said and finish downloading the rest of the program. There is another way
to download the entire program .exe file and then install it like a "normal"
  program.

If you want to find the temp files, they are usually located in the Temp/IE5
type folders. Use your Windows Search utility and limit the parameters of
the search to .tmp files downloaded in the last _____ days (however many
days it has been) and you will find the folder where they are located. If
you empty your temp files on a regular basis (I do mine once a week at least
and have IE set up to empty the IE temp files upon closing the last IE
window), you may have already trashed them.

Here is a link to the FULL (9.93MB) download of YM vs. 8 but I'm not sure if
it is 8.1 or not. http://download.yahoo.com/dl/msgr8/us/ymsgr8us.exe When
I tried going to just http://download.yahoo.com, it redirected to
http://downloads.yahoo.com and there was a button for YM but when I clicked
it, it only offered me the 484KB small version of YM self-installer that
then connects to the net and downloads the rest. I ONLY do the full
versions whenever I upgrade since I have seen too many problems with the
  smaller version self-installer thing.

You can also download FULL versions of YM (and older versions) by going to
  various download sites like
  http://www.filehippo.com/download_yahoo_messenger/ which has version 8.1....
  available.

  Hi Lenny..........Thanks for your reply.

I AM aware that I can "usually" choose where to 'put' installed programs,be
it off the net or from CD.

However,in the case of YM,it goes directly to its own place without asking
ME where I want it to go.I do notice when its starts to download the program
that it goes to its own Yahoo folder (which it makes itself) .I quickly open
this folder and see the icon as a setup program. However when the program has
downloaded fully, this icon disappears and it makes mention of a Temp file.I
go to search for this file and it isn't there !!

Whenever you download a program, you have to choose a place to
  download it..
such as Desktop or a folder on your computer.

Do a file search for ymsgr and you should find the actual download.
  It will
probably look like this... ymsgr8us.exe but the number could be
  different
and be 8.1 so that is why I suggested searching only for ymsgr.

To do a search, in case you don't know, choose Start>Search>All
  Files And
Folders>(then type ymsgr in the field for "All Or Part Of File
  Name">then in
the "Look In" field, choose "Local Hard Drive(s)" or "My
  Computer">then
expand the "When Was It Modified" and choose "Don't Remember">then
  expand
the "What Size Is It?" and choose "Don't Remember">then expand "More
advanced options" and make sure (All Files And Folders) is in the
  search
fields and put checkmarks in the top three things for searching in
  system,
hidden and subfolders. Click the Search button and get yourself a
  Coke.

When Windows finds the file, move it to your desktop or create a
  folder in
"My Documents" called "Yahoo Messenger" and move it there. I
  normally
download most things to "Desktop" and then once I've done what I
  need to do
with the download, move it to a folder in "My Documents".

Subject: [Y!M] Where is downloaded program

Hi.........I had a problem with my PC and to correct it I had to do
  a full
  reinstall of XP.

Before the problem arose(and not because of it),I was using Yahoo
  Messenger
  v8.0.....which I had downloaded previously.After the reinstall I
  installed
YM version 5.6 which I had on disk.I had to re-download version 8.0
  again.

Now,the question is,when 8.0 is downloaded where is it downloaded
  too? And
am I able to reinstall it from that place, rather than having to
  download it
ONCE again if I get future problems with my PC.I am on dial-up and
  as the
file is approx 20mb,it is a bit of a pain.

  TIA

  Stew
