OK. It sounds like your YM is having trouble connecting to the internet.
Your computer may be online since you are able to use other programs online
but something is blocking YM.

Do you have a firewall and if so, which one? That's the first thing I would
suspect. If you've blocked YM inadvertently with a firewall rule, you would
need to go to the firewall's forums or tech support to learn how to unblock
it. I'm familiar with a few different firewalls so let me know which one
you are using.

Next, while you not signed into YM, which you can't do anyhow, open the
Preferences menu for Connection and there are four choices and I think you
were there before since you started out talking about proxy server, etc.
Put the checkmark on "No proxies" first and then apply and OK. Then try
signing in. Repeat this on each of the other settings to see if any of them
get you online with YM.

Thank you so much for your time. I tried everything you said word for word.
I cleaned, I rebooted, I downloaded and rebooted. I don't get the error
messages anymore upon install, no I click on the messenger icon, put in my
user name and password, the icon guy jumps up and down while yellow, then
changes to gray. Nothing, no other boxes come up nothing, not even a error
message saying "wrong password, or wrong username" (which I know it is
right, I log in everyday to yahoo.) Nothing. THank you for sending me the
quick messenger, and that is could, yet I need the messenger mainly for
conferencing and chatting with more than one person at a time. If you can
add anymore insight I would appreciate it.

Are you downloading YM from the Yahoo Messenger site? If so, you are
starting off with just the small YM program installer (475kb), rather than
the full program (10MB). Here's my little article I wrote on "How I always
do a clean install of YM" which has one of the sources for the full version
of YM (10MB).

Let me know if you were using the "installer" version from Yahoo's website.

In the meantime, since you are desperate, you can use the website based YM
for chatting. You can get to it by going to http://webmessenger.yahoo.com

I have downloaded, uninstalled and reinstalled this program three times and
when I sign in, the little emoticon jumps up and down, then turns grey and
stops. No error message nothing. When people invite me to chat, nothing
happens. I did recieve this message during the
install: "download file has been canceled or interrupted 404 not found" and
then: "the file c:documents and settings\Larisa Nageli\local
settings\temp\3049551\ytb_inst.exe could not be opened. I clicked ok and
there on my desktop sits the yahoo messenger icon. I have reviewed
everything in help. I switched to the no proxies and the no network and the
firewall with proxies, I have called Qwest to get the proxy server address
and port#; they claim that there isn't one. I need to get onto chat
desperately with my classmates for my classes that are online. If anyone can
help me I would appreciate it.
