I remember having this issue on MSN Messenger (now Windows Live Messenger) a while back but a later update finally fixed it. I've never had the issue with YM. One thing you can do to temporarily help with the issue is to make the chat window a larger size, maybe even full screen which would .
I see you are using a Beta version so you might think about going back one version or doing a full uninstall, cleanup and full reinstall. I don't use Mac's but I have a blog article on how I do a full and clean uninstall/reinstall on XP which might help you. Many of the problems that come up with YM is during the install process when using the Yahoo Installer version, rather than a full version install. All it takes is for one of the thousands of .dll files to get mangled or corrupted for YM to have a lot of quirks and this seems to happen more often when using the YM Installer version.
