Apparently, when you signed in, you let YM do the default thing and allow
itself to sign in any time an internet connection is present. The thing I
am not clear on, since you posted to the YM group, is did you sign into
Yahoo home page via Internet Explorer or other browser or did you sign into
Yahoo Messenger (YM) and check your email from there?

If done on a web page, then your S-I-L will have to open
http://www.yahoo.com and see if that page shows you as signed in. Then she
could simply click the logout button.

If done via YM, then your S-I-L will have to go to your signed in YM and
then click on the main Messenger Menu (above your friends list), then click
"Sign Out". This will bring up a grayed out window with your Yahoo ID,
Password (made up of dots) and then three options which are probably checked
off... 1. Remember my ID & password; 2. Sign in automatically; 3. Sign in as
invisible to everyone. Your S-I-L should uncheck all three of these,
especially on the guest account but it's also good to NOT allow YM to ever
sign in automatically.

Even on my own machine, I only keep 1 & 3 checked off. I NEVER allow YM to
sign in automatically, nor do I allow any of my programs to sign in
automatically.

Whenever you are on a non-owned computer, you should make YM do everything
manually where you have to type in your ID and password each time so it does
not remember you or your password once you sign out. You should also check
the preferences section to make sure it is not archiving chats since then
the owner of the machine will be able to read all of your chat sessions even
after you sign out.

If this continues after the above steps, your S-I-L might have to turn off
the Guest account... they really aren't very good accounts and have security
issues. It's best to only turn on the Guest account when you actually have
Guests and then turn it back off when you don't have Guests. This can be
done by going to Control Panel (Classic View, not the Category View), User
Accounts and then Turn Off the Guest Account.

If your S-I-L is not a frequent user of YM, then they should also go into
MSCONFIG (Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG and Enter) and un-check YM on the
Startup tab and also on the Services tab since YM and many other programs
will add themselves to your system start up when you install them. There is
no reason to have all of these non-essential programs starting up and
running every time you turn on your computer. This slows down the start up
and shut down processes and slows down your computer when it's on by using
memory when these programs are not even in use. You and your S-I-L should
read up more on deleting things from Startup and Services in MSCONFIG
before changing things but it's OK to uncheck things like the various IM
programs, most media players, etc. These things are not needed to run full
time. They will still start when you open a media file or click on the IM
program but at least they won't be slowing your computer down the rest of
the time when they are not in use.

Subject: [Y!M] Help! I forgot to sign out on someone else's computer

Hello, I'm a newbie here. I have a problem. I was on vacation and used my
sister in law's laptop to check my email. I signed into Yahoo! and forgot to
sign out. I'm home now, and when she opens her guest account of Windows, it
automatically signs me out here and signs me onto her laptop. She is not
very computer savvy, and neither am I on this matter. Is there some way I
can sign myself out of her computer? Please make your answers detailed for
us non techies.
