Well.. if the .dat files are in your Message Archives, you'll be able to
read them there.. which is through the YM program.  Did you try opening the
entire Message Archives window via the Contacts Menu?  That will open a
"Message Archives" window that is navigable to all past chats and you can
sort it by date, name, etc.

Depending on the size of your archives and your computer speed, it could
take a minute or so and while it's compiling the data the rest of YM will
probably freeze up so don't open the Message Archives window while you are
in the middle of chatting.  Yours probably isn't that big since you only
recently started archiving so it probably won't take long to open but as it
grows over the years, it becomes a large data file.

I was not sure if it was safe to open dat files or if was possible.

The particular messages were for yahoo ids that are no longer in existence,
so I was not able to do so via messenger.
