OK. Let me clarify something. Is her name showing up for both of you when you IM each other? If so, maybe she gave you some bad directions when setting up your preferences but we should be able to fix it either way.
While your Yahoo Profile is integrated with Yahoo Messenger, it has more to do with what you show up as in chat rooms, not with IM'ing people on your friends list. That is done with your Contact Details and Preferences section of the Main Messenger menu... at least on the PC version. I'm not a Mac'er so I'm not familiar with the Mac version but I'll presume it's similar. On the main friends-list YM window, choose the Messenger Menu, then My Contact Info and fill that out with as little or as much as you wish to disclose to everyone on your friends list. I only have my first name and last initial and then in the Nickname field, I have my Yahoo ID. The reason for this is that when you add someone, you can choose to show either their real name or their Yahoo ID in your friends-list. Do this by going into the Main Messenger menu again, choose Preferences, then in the Appearance section, you can put a bullet in either "Nickname or First and Last Name" or "Yahoo ID". Try IM'ing her again and see if that fixed it. If it didn't, take a screen shot and send me a private email with a copy of the image so I can see what you are talking about.
