OK. There's a couple things you should check.

On the main Messenger menu, click "My Contact Details" and on the Primary
Tab, fill in your name or what parts of it you may want to show up. I
simply use Lenny for first name and V. for last name. Then fill in your
"nickname" in the applicable field. I leave everything else blank except
for the Messenger ID field where it defaults to show my Yahoo ID. I do NOT
include my email address in the applicable field. I leave all of the other
Tabs blank.

Click the "Save & Close" button when you are done making your changes.

Next, in the main Messenger menu, choose Preferences and then Appearance.
Near the bottom of that section, you will see "For each contact on the
Messenger List, show their: __ Nickname or First and Last Name OR __ Yahoo
ID."

I have a bullet in "Nickname or First and Last Name" but when I add a new
friend to my Messenger Friends List, I still right click on them and choose
"Contact Details" and then put their Yahoo ID, followed by other info, ASL,
First Name, etc., all in the First Name field, but I will put their Last
Name and other info in the other fields. This way, my friends list is
always sorted by Yahoo ID but also includes the persons first name and ASL
so I'll have a better chance of remembering someone at a glance if it's not
someone I chat with often. I will also, occasionally look through the other
tabs on the Contact Details window and will sometimes find where someone has
added other details but 99% do not add any further info in all of the other
tabs.

Let me know if that solves your problem.
