What version is he currently using? You mention YM 7.x but I wanted to be
sure.

Yes, it is true that Yahoo!, Inc., is taking steps to block any versions
older than YM 8.x but there may be some work-arounds coming out as the date
gets closer.

YM 8.1x is still available on several download sites like
http://www.filehippo.com/download_yahoo_messenger/ or Download.com or
MajorGeeks.com, etc. According to the technical info on this page
http://download.cnet.com/Yahoo-Messenger/3000-2150_4-10724394.html, YM
8.1.0.413, the latest version of YM 8.0, will work on Windows 98. Just make
sure you don't install all the other stuff that Yahoo!, Inc. tries to push
with their programs... like the Toolbar, starting up whenever the computer
starts up, etc. While at FileHippo or one of the other sites, you may also
want to download a FULL version of one of the older versions of YM, like the
latest version of 7.x, just in case 8.1x gives 98 some problems. Then after
some work-arounds are created for older versions, you could reinstall
version 7.x.

There is also the ability to use Yahoo's Web Messenger, either from the
Yahoo Email web page interface or from http://webmessenger.yahoo.com, so if
all else fails and he can no longer use all of the features in YM, he will
at least be able to IM his friends using one of the web messenger services.

On a side note, it may also be time to get dad a newer computer. Windows 98
really shouldn't be online any longer due to it's many, many security
issues.

Subject: [Y!M] YM on Windows 98

My father is using an older computer with Windows 98. He is not able to
upgrade his PC or operating system.

He is getting messages suggesting Yahoo Messenger 7 will stop working after
August 15. It appears that Messenger 9 requires Windows XP. Is this true? If
so, what can be done to keep him on line?
