The branch-2 patch looks reasonable to me. Nit: the new isAlive method should
be private. When fixing this, please post the patch according to the
recommended [patch naming
conventions|https://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/HowToContribute#Naming_your_patch]
so we can reopen the JIRA and get the QA bot to run the standard tests on it.
