I'm not clear if this is the right approach... 

How about something simpler:
# RM UI displays current usage of resources (memory, cpu etc.)
# Application can pass in a string (along with progress) where-by we can 
annotate with something app-specific like: "100 maps total, 5 finished, 5 
running"
