We are going to change Spark since we have no choice if we want to be
compatible with both 2.4 and 2.3.
I'm fine with not making it public, but then MR should be changed to not rely
on it so this breakage doesn't happen in the future. And I still think the old
api should be put back in for backwards compatibility.
