Adding a proposed patch for branch-2 (for 2.9.0) for feedback. I'll also add a
branch-2.8 patch (for 2.8.0) which is a subset of the 2.9.0 changes.
I don't have a strong opinion on what should be done on the trunk (3.0.0). I
think it is OK to leave it as is, because this change's sole purpose is to
maintain API backward compatibility. One could regard this as 2.8.0/2.9.0
providing this band-aid and 3.0.0 taking the band-aid off.
