About further resources I suggest ones in gsoc project [1]. About testing is not for us, but also for you to see if it is something you are interested in, as you spend some time on it. How to get hands dirty is also at [1] at the bottom. I suggest if you have the change done to open pull request and assign as reviewer me and lslezak and we will discuss with you changes if makes sense and also some minor stuff that is good to set at the beginning like coding style and level of comments.
