*The Life of a Deputy:* Tribute to Cde Esther Barsel as I know her The SACP JHB branch has lost a great comrade in Cde Esther, a space I can not put in words as to how it may be filled probable it may never be filled by anybody; there is no one like her. When I first met Cde Esther half a decade ago, we met at our Communist University (Political Subcommittee) for weekly meetings, at her age she was participating in such a manner that defied her age, and oozing with energy. Both for the branch and the Communist University, I got to know closely later as I became her leader and her attendance was regular up until very late when she relocated to Frail-care Centre. At the branch her participation was recognizable and we shall live to miss it. To mention just one pinnacle, Cde Esther and Cde Shantie when we were debating the Freedom Charter, the two comrades were able to give the background analysis and detail of events leading up to the adoption of the Freedom Charter and events afterwards as comrades who were at the forefront and at grassroots level. The branch shall miss her willingness and availability for branch activities and her love for the poor and downtrodden. When the Branch Executive visited her recently at the Fail-care Centre, she was less concerned about her declining health status but wanted to know more about status of the branch and challenges. When the JHB YCL, approached the JHB SACP branch, with a view that the JHB SACP branch be renamed after her, she referred the matter to the branch for finalization, voicing her displeasure about naming places with people who are still alive. I think now it is the opportune time to revisit the matter of renaming the JHB SACP branch after her, to be Esther Barsel Branch. Cde Esther respected that she joined the SACP not that the SACP joined her up to the end. When a close comrade of Cde Esther was (a family like) comrade was suspended Cde Esther continued to work for the movement unlike what is currently happening, she knew very well that she is a member of SACP, not a member of a member. Her loyalty was with the organization and not individual. I have no doubt in my mind that wherever she is now, she has already opened an SACP branch, probably together with Cde Chris Hani are working on a strategy to help the poor with other great leaders of our movement. Cde Esther as I know her was and is a Comrade, a Woman, a Mother and a Grandmother. May her soul rest in peace…we shall live to miss her with her smile.
