Hey Cde Phasha,
I fully agree with you. You remind me of the fast train that was stopped in Mtata. It moved without commuters. It marginalized organic intellectuals and created a mediocrity that will agree without question. TUT was their playing field. Some might say I was bitter or still am - and yes I was because I saw people who had no interest of serving students but their big egos. Thanks to the sober comrades who stopped that train. I led with you on a politically progressive CSRC, I know what you mean.
The reason for the change of leadership was based on a rumours that the CSRC SASCO deployees were divided. The then NEC decided that they lost trust in Mdu and Phasha because we did supported Floyd for the position of Secretary General in Limpopo in 2005 and were correctly suspected to be supporting him as well in Cape Town. For that reason they had to compromise both of us but could not because of our mass based support in TUT thus they compromised you for "comrade" Arthur Mngomezulu.
To think that the NEC was done, it brought a list (enroute to the Mtata congress) that suggested who should be in the NEC aligned with their list. It undermined the capacity of the leadership of the province and the wisdom of branches to decide on who qualifies to be in the NEC thus engage with other provinces as such. It demoralized the then chairperson of the province and some members of the PEC and branches. Summarily, this was viewed by us as a suppression of democratic processes and independent provincial political views.
As for the congress of SASCO in Gauteng, I wish the decision to continue with the congress can be reversed. I blamed those who wore the T-Shirts of "Mawethu for president" for reasons that are known to all of us. I said even if one supports a leader, printing and distribution of such T-Shirts was foreign to the organization. I also opened engagements for both the Joburg and Tshwane region on the issue of leadership but failed and was accused of being sent by my "principals".
I, in the same way, criticized those who came to the congress venue to disrupt in an unbecoming way. I was hit with a chair in that congress by those who viewed the actions of the outgone president as factional. I, moreover, supported the decision of calling police to the congress because the property of the institution was in danger of vandalism but I was against the chasing away of official delegates from branches and REC who differed with the preference of the NEC on leadership. This made the congress, in my view, no longer to qourate, even if credentials were controversially adopted. A congress can not continue only because credentials were adopted, more than half of the delegates should still be at congress.
I hope and believe that the current leadership will not fall in the trap of deploying mediocrity into the SRC because that will definitely compromise students and reverse the gains that others have made in transforming institutions of higher learning. I also believe that the NEC will not sideline certain provinces for not supporting them in Mtata. The focus of the NEC should be a massive political education that will produce marxist-leninist students.
I am happy in the way SASCO congress in Mpumalanga was conducted. The deployee from the NEC comrade Mandlana did not come to congress with his preferred list of candidates for the PEC but intervened where congress was moving away from unity. as a result, only one position was contested and democracy took its course. The provincial congress was a political school. The contributions by both the outgone chairperson and the deployee of NEC were political engagements that sparked debates. WE lived up to the theme of congress "Deepening debates, Building a new cadre in defense of the revolution".
Forward with the new National Collective.
