I think this move by the state president as much as it may be viewed as progressive it also presents some serious challenges going forward. We should remember that amongst other considerations by judge Nicholson in arriving at his decision that there was political interference by the then executive; he cited to the suspension of the NDPP by the president as a direct result of his intentions to prosecute the National police commissioner; which supported his ruling that indeed there was a political interference by the then executive on the independence and operations of the NPA. We should also note that Pikoli generally inherited a dysfunctional and compromised institution from his predecessor Bulelani Ngucka, I think the report correctly refers to the need to rectify the systems of the NPA operations which has in the main been addressed in the new approved elite crime fighting unit to be incorporated under the SAPS. I think the removal of Pikoli might not have been the right thing to do given that much of what led to him presiding over an institution that has operated as a law unto itself has been substantially addressed by the new unit to replace the scorpions. I say this more so on the basis that this decision in a way vindicates Mbeki when he says that he never interfered with the NPA operations and that his decision to suspend the NDPP was within the ambit of the law and had nothing to do with his desire to protect the National police commissioner, comrades you can be rest assured that Mbeki and the NPA itself will use the decision by the president to fire Pikoli to strengthen their appeal case against the Nicholson ruling on the Zuma matter. I need not tell you what the consequence of a Mbeki/NPA successful case against that progressive judgment will mean to us the ANC and Alliance partners. The YCL has on numerous occasions in the past expressed its deep concerns about the abuse of NPA to fight internal political battles in our movement, and our concerns about some of the operations of the Scorpions, including Hollywood style raids to the homes of ANC President Jacob Zuma and his close associates. Regrettably Pikoli has never seriously addressed these concerns. We commend President Motlanthe for relieving Pikoli within the context of totally eliminating abuse of the NPA for narrow factional and political battles. We hope that this will restore the credibility of the NPA. We also urge President Motlanthe to change the systems, which allowed Pikoli to abuse the Scorpions to further the interests of his political masters. Pikoli departure should also serve a basis of creating stability in the NPA and the current acting head of the NPA Adv Mkotedi Mpshe is nothing else, but a carbon copy of Pikoli. The YCL also calls upon President Motlanthe to ensure that the Ginwala Commission report be made public. We also demand a public explanation from Pikoli on the Special Browse Mole Report since we believe he has a case to answer in the political conspiracy to discredit the President of the ANC Cde Jacob Zuma.
