Before I submit my piece for engagement I think I like what President Hugo Chavez did, by cutting diplomatic ties with the zionist state of Israel, while we still display another quite diplomacy. We have taken many resolutions about supporting the Palestinian struggle, so I think Israel has displayed more than enough intransigent, and therefore we must cut ties with them. They are not even our major trading partner or anything of nay importance, except that we apparently still have some arms contract signed by the apartheid regime, which are coming to an end soon. I am currently in the West Bank, Palestine, and have observed the reaction the international community worldwide. I must say people in the developed countries have seemed to be more passionate on this issue more than those from developing countries who have experienced oppression. South Africa is included in the number of those who have taken to he streets, except for the muslism communities. Though, I do not want to doubt their participation, I do not think this issue is a religious one, and to leave in the hands of religious formations, will make people doubt it. No offence to Muslim brothers and sisters in the forum and outside. This seem not to come to an end soon, Israel is determined to get back into the Gaza Strip. The recent attack on Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip is out of order, as we would say in South Africa, but also very inciting. This happens amidst the illegal occupation of Palestine and also the daily human rights abuses of the Arabs in east Jerusalem, West Bank and Bethlehem in the hands of the well armed Israeli military forces. This happens when the international community is busy with its rhetoric and statements against Israel despicable behaviour, other than take meaningful actions against this outlaw regime. The recent attacks happened during the time when both Hamas and Israel were supposed to go back to negotiations and both should take blame for the deaths of civilians on both sides. Israel should also responsibility on the already bad humanitarian crisis in the Strip as a result of its closure of Gaza and also their refusal to let aid in, their cutting off electricity suppliers and damaging of the infrastructure. Israel created one big prison in the Gaza Strip. As much as the reason was to go for the Hamas, it is hardly true that to believe that, given their general dislike of Palestinians that they have oppressed for over 60 years since the creation of the state of Israel and more before that. The attacks were fait accompli on the side of Israel, as elections are approaching, they have nothing to do with those ‘home made’ rockets that Hamas has been throwing into Israel. This is a political campaign to try and entice the voters for next month’s elections. The blind citizens would also go and cast their votes for these warmongers, despite the lives being endangered through such acts. The question of the conflict is the main thing in Israel, hence even their political campaign is directed towards that. It is on rare occasion to see a commentary on issues pertaining to development or under-development, but the conflict is the main thing. The more a leader hates Arabs, or Palestinians in Israel, the better you are to the population and you are guaranteed the highest office in the land. Even when it is through killing and restricting movements by building separation fences, and arresting as many as possible. Israel has become the worst implementing agents of apartheid. Theirs is worst than what South Africa saw till 1994 (this done not condone apartheid actions in SA). This action was taken as an attempt to impress the Israeli voters, with elections imminent in February. Unjust and immoral as it was the Israeli politicians still do not show any signs of remorse and still cling to killing of the civilians. History links with the recent situation, Israel was founded and violence and killings of the same Palestinians, this does not come as a surprise at all. The only thing that the world should do now, after over hundred resolutions of the toothless UN was defied by Israel, is to isolate them diplomatically and impose economic sanctions over them. Apartheid South Africa was cowed through such, amongst other things, so zionist Israel should be accorded the same as well.
