*BUTI MANAMELA: YCL stands by JACOB ZUMA: *

*Tuesday 3 February 2009*

When ANC PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma appears in the Pietermaritzburg High Court
tomorrow Wednesday 4 February 2009, he will not be alone. He will be
accompanied by among others, YCL National Secretary Buti Manamela, as well
as a contingent of YCL national leaders. The thoughts and well wishes of
hundreds of thousands of Progressive Youth Alliance and ANC members will
also be with him.

We have consistently expressed our disgust at the continued persecution of
the ANC President by malicious elements in the NPA and others seeking
revenge following a collapsed bid to win the ANC Presidency in Polokwane
2007. We maintain our belief that the public persecution of the ANC
President is nothing else but trumped up charges by the NPA, and that our
country and young democracy is being held at hostage by scavengers in the
NPA.

We have been vilified and called names for supporting ANC President Jacob
during his Court appearances. Others have resorted to all manner of
hyperbole, predicting the demise of the judiciary and the death of democracy
should a political solution be found in this matter.

These predictions have no foundation and indicate a fundamental fault line
in some people's understanding of this case, as well as why the YCL has
taken the position that it has in this matter. We believe that tomorrow when
the ANC President appears in court, the judge will preside fairly and act in
the interests of our judicial system and the Constitution.

Issued by Buti Manamela, YCL National Secretary
