*For the best in wine and woman, stick with us — Julius*
THE ANC taught Cope deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa, and others who
defected with him, dinner table etiquette and helped Shilowa abandon his
trade-mark red socks for other colours.

These were some of the claims made by ANC Youth League president Julius
Malema when he handed a R25,000 bursary cheque to Shilowa’s estranged son,
Marvin, at the University of Limpopo yesterday.
Malema told scores of students gathered to watch him give the money to the
25-year-old law student, that Shilowa and other Cope leaders were not
grateful for what the ANC had done for them when they were members.
“The ANC changes lives. It can change you from a hobo into someone very
important.
“This ANC has taught those who are insulting it today to use fork and knife,
to taste red wine, to wear expensive suits and to swap red socks for many
other [colours],” Malema said.
He was clearly taking a swipe at Shilowa, who was known for his love of red
socks when he led union federation Cosatu in the 1990s before the ANC
appointed him Gauteng premier.
Since then, Shilowa has been widely celebrated for his expensive taste in
wine and his love of designer suits.
The Youth League president told the students that “the good times” were over
for those who had defected to form Cope.
“They will never feed their children. They will never eat at expensive
restaurants again. The nice things are over for them. It is only nice in the
ANC.
“Beautiful things are in the ANC. Ugly things are outside the ANC.
“Beautiful girls are found in the ANC. If you want to get married, you must
choose to get married in the ANC,” he said.
Malema said he had decided to help Marvin Shilowa with his studies because
his father could not.
“In the ANC, we have leaders who love their families, who take care of their
children ,” he said.
Shilowa and his son hit the headlines two years ago when Marvin sued his
father for financial support. Marvin, who has been appointed the ANC Youth
League’s “ambassador” for its scholarship and bursary programme for “needy
students”, said he was hurt that his father would not support him.
“But this is not political and not about him. I was just not sure where I
was going to get the money to study. But it is clear that, if he can’t
assist me, there are others who can,” Marvin said.
Malema took a swipe at the DA.
“On their billboards , Helen Zille is in front and Joe Seremane is at the
back, smiling at the Madam,” he said.
