*YOUR VOTE IS YOUR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS!*

*Friday 20 March 2009*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] joins the working
class and the poor youth of South Africa in celebrating Human Rights Day
this Saturday, 21 March 2009.

This year’s celebration takes place at a very exciting and interesting time
in the political calendar of a young democracy, the forthcoming April 22
national and provincial elections. As we celebrate and remember those who
suffered and died for our rights in the past in the hands of the apartheid
regime, we should also use our rights to vote as part of improving our lives
for the better. Working together we can do more.

The YCLSA calls on the working class and the poor youth to effectively use
the right to vote as enshrined in the constitution, and participate in the
strengthening of our constitutional democracy towards building a better
future. As we celebrate Human Rights Day it is prudent to be reminded of the
constitutional provision for our rights to adequate housing, health care,
free education, food, water and social security.

We must acknowledge and appreciate the advances that have been made by our
nascent democratic dispensation towards the practical realisation of these
rights, and commit ourselves using the barrel of the vote to build on the
solid foundation that has been built by the ANC government.

Much has been achieved over the past 15 years of our freedom and the
challenge is to do more by working together. These includes millions of
decent jobs created, 3 million houses built, free access to basic health
care and access to tertiary education through the National Students
Financial Aid Scheme [NSFAS].

All these advances are part of our ongoing efforts towards the practical
realisation of our rights as enshrined in the constitution. They are 100
times more than what the Apartheid government has done for our people for
more than 340 years in government. This has been done by the ANC together
with all our people, and thus, the ANC says in the forthcoming elections
“Working Together We Can Do More”.

This year marks the 4th election period to renew the mandate of our public
representatives in parliament. It is an historical anomaly that when we were
preparing for our first democratic elections in 1994, the right-wing forces
dastardly and cowardly killed Chris Hani to derail our rights for One Man,
One Vote. We call on the 78% young voters to use the right to vote which was
achieved through the blood of Chris Hani to go to the polls on April 22, to
deliver their unapologetic vote to the ANC.

As the YCLSA, we call on young people to take an oath to ensure that
“Together with the African National Congress [ANC] we can do more” to
improve the conditions faced by ourselves and the people of our country.
