Fellow Members
In the last few days, the City of Joburg has been on an onslaught to attack the
potential of entrepreneurship in the city, which in my view deserves proper
analysis by our comrades in this forum.Should we put on our dark glasses and
say we don't see or what?
Should we allow the City to be ungovernable and/or should we overlook the
harshness of Metro Police disallowing fellow African brothers displaying their
enterpreneurial skills?
This might be a catch 22 situation for many of us but what should be done?
Firstly; The Soccer games in our township especially communities next to venues
where PSL Games play, see the opportunity to sell some foods for the spectators
as way to fork a living. With the advent of the World Cup 2010,we have seen
instances where only licensed products are to be allowed. But what do the
spectators currently eat? Recently I attended a Chiefs/Celtic Game at Super
Stadium and ate well cooked food sold by ordinary people who are making a
living for their kids to pay school funds, electricity and other daily
essentials. With such people,is the City doing okay by arresting them or taking
their stock away?
Secondly; How far have we empowered our people to participate in processes of
Municipal By-Laws to enable them to abide by the law if they want to engage in
informal business in the towns, cities etc? Maybe; our people if they can be
appraised on how to sell within the acceptable ways will avoid the ugly scenes
that we normally encounter when our people are confronted by municipal law
enforcers.
Lastly; This acts if not monitored may fuel unnecessary ugly scenes of brawls in
the city and it will be difficult to judge who is right or wrong as the
situation was left unattended for quite a long time.
Failer to navigate solutions will be a failure to reach out to our people. The
informal business people must be organized to fight these battles side by side
with the general struggles to improve our lives.
It is not yet Uhuru!!!
