*01 May 2009* *YCLSA May Day Message: Decent Work For All Now ....Working Class Youth to the Front!*
The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] joins the workers of our country and the world in celebrating this august and historic workers day, May Day. On this occasion we salute the organised and unorganised workers as led by our reliable and revolutionary ally, the shield and spear of the exploited South African workers, the Congress of South African Trade Unions [COSATU]. This May Day coincides with the 86th Anniversary of the formation of the Young Communist League of South Africa [YCLSA] on May 25, 1922. We would like to take this opportunity to salute the heroes and heroines of the YCLSA, who played a key and important role in building a strong Trade Union movement in the late 1920’s such as Cdes Thomas Mbeki, Sara Sable, Harold Wolpe and countless other young communists. Their Communist activism is engraved in our hearts and minds while it continues to serve as an inspiration in our concerted efforts of mobilising young workers into the fold and mould of trade union formations as led by COSATU. We are celebrating this year’s workers day in the midst of the global financial crisis which our mother body the South African Communist Party [SACP] has characterised as the *‘socialism of debts’* and the collapse of the barbaric and exploitive Capitalist system. We are also celebrating this year’s workers day after a decisive electoral victory of the Revolutionary Alliance as led by the African National Congress [ANC]. It was the workers as led by their vanguard party the SACP and COSATU that mobilised those in factory floors, farms, hostels, townships, rural areas for a decisive electoral victory of the ANC led Alliance. We also congratulate the ANC for winning KwaZulu-Natal decisively. As the YCLSA we are calling on young workers who work as security guards, taxi conductors, tellers, domestic workers, waiters, child-minders, gardeners, factory tailors, cleaners, clerks, tellers who continue to endure the pain of hardship and sufferings in the context of deepening and deteriorating standard of living in our country, continued gap between the rich and poor, escalating and ballooning unemployment rate and jobs losses to use this workers day to propagate, fight, agitate and demand decent work for all. *What needs to be Done!* The YCLSA fully supported and mobilised its entire structures for an ANC Alliance electoral victory for a number of reasons. These included; - Access to Education - Access to Basic Health Care - Rural development and Agrarian Reform - Creation of Decent Work - Fighting crime During the elections campaign the YCLSA reached out to thousands of young workers and more young professionals, including casual workers. It was clear to us that their working conditions have not changed, despite the many progressive labour laws passed by the ANC government. On this May Day we call upon young workers and working class youth to intensify the struggle against labour-brokers to liberate casual workers from McDonaldisation working conditions. The 2009 ANC-led Alliance electoral victory must therefore bring about decent jobs for all as part of reversing the huge unemployment cycle amongst the working class and the poor youth. The mandate the ANC-led Alliance got gives a clear signal that the era of denialism and the language of market fundamental being in place are of the past, but was is urgent is translation of the Manifesto into key government programmes for the advance of the struggle of the working class and the poor. We are also celebrating this 2009 May Day as part of celebrating 15 years of South Africa’s democracy. The democracy which was achieved through the shed of blood of working class youth and the cowardly and brutal assassination of the late SACP General Secretary, Comrade Thembisile ‘Chris’ Martin Hani. Indeed we are celebrating the many advances we have made as a country as part of advancing the National Democratic Revolution [NDR] and the struggle for Socialism. We therefore call upon the working class youth and organised young workers in particular – as the most organised layer of this class – to join the trade union formations, as part flexing our muscles, and to struggle for the following; - Accelerate the implementation of the ANC Alliance elections manifesto; - End the casualisation of young workers and labour-brokers for the creation of decent and quality jobs for all; - Fight against corruption and patronage in all spheres of government and public entities; For the YCLSA the above struggles are part of our struggle for a better and just South Africa for the working class and the poor youth. Let this ANC Alliance electoral victory lay a foundation for advancing the ideals that Cde Thembisile ‘Chris’ Martin Hani in bettering the lives of our people for the better, especially vulnerable sections of our society – the working class and the poor. This can only be by ‘working together we can achieve more’.
