*UNISA is not private property of Barney Pityana’s stooge Prof Akhabue Okharedia!*
*13 May 2009* The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] is flabbergasted by the latest attempts of Barney Pityana’s stooge Director of Academic Affairs, Professor Akhabue Okharedia, who is maliciously embarking on a personal vendetta to deny the newly appointed Minister of Higher Education and Training and SACP General Secretary Cde Blade Nzimande from visiting the UNISA Business School as per the request of senior academics. We are deeply embarrassed and disturbed by these ill-informed and childish attempts by the despicable Prof Okharedia, given the chaos and the mess that the majority of UNISA students’ are being subjected to in the absence of clear, focus and committed leadership at this prestigious institution. We call for the immediate expulsion and removal of Prof Okharedia as Director of Academic Affairs at UNISA. UNISA cannot be relegated into a private property of Pityana’s stooges to advance his deep hatred of the new administration as led by President Jacob Zuma particularly to undermine the newly appointed Minister of Higher Education and Training Cde Nzimande. The Minister of Higher Education and Training has a right to visit all the institutions of higher learning in the country as part of implementing the electoral mandate given to the ANC led government as it relate to matters that affect higher education and training. This further calls for the review of the appointment of Vice-Chancellors by elitist University Councils without clear participation of the key stakeholder – the working class communities. The appointment of Vice-Chancellors should not be an exclusive right of Councils, but the powers to appoint Vice-Chancellors should be vested in the Office of the Ministry of Higher Education and Training on behalf of the people.
