*YCLSA vs Pityana...The battle reaches the boardroom! * *20 May 2009*
The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] and South African Students Congress [SASCO] will hold discussions with UNISA Vice-Chancellor and Principal Pastor Nyameko Barney Pityana, tomorrow Thursday 21 May 2009 in Tshwane. We therefore must inform all the students who continue to suffer under the wrath of Pastor Pityana’s dictatorship and the public that we have taken a tactical decision to suspend the planned mass action that was scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 21 May 2009. We strongly believe that the forced meeting presents us with an opportunity to engage UNISA management to adhere to our demands as part of our efforts of safeguarding UNISA’s reputation and rescuing it from sinking to the gutter under the stewardship of Pastor Pityana. We are conscious of the fact that this meeting might be a tactic by the UNISA management side to out-manoeuvre the students and the workers as part of silencing dissent and cheap blackmail. However we will not be fooled by UNISA, which means that in the event of failure to meet our demands we will regroup and mobilise our forces to render the University ungovernable. We call on those affected 20 000 students who had been financially excluded to prepare for their mid-year exams to go to examination centres to write. We are making this call through our protracted struggles and victory scored against the inept UNISA management to allow all students to write. The YCLSA reiterates its position that Pastor Pityana must be fired as the Vice-Chancellor of UNISA in view of the numerous “catalogues” of demands that we have submitted for his removal. The outcomes of the meeting will be urgently communicated as soon as it is concluded.
