*YCLSA disturbed by the death of thirteen initiates in Mpumalanga* *28 May 2009*
The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the province of Mpumalanga is aggrieved and disturbed to learn that thirteen initiates have died in the former KwaNdebele area. As the YCLSA we are concerned with high alarming number of initiates who die in imposed initiation schools as a result of the commodification of this ritual at the expense of the lives of the initiates. We strongly believe that circumcision should be done within acceptable health standards and norms. We call on the provincial Department of Health to work closely with all relevant authorities administering circumcision to devise means and strategies in minimising unwarranted deaths of initiates. We also further call on the provincial Department of Health and that of Social Development to strongly look into the provision of sanitary towels to women in the province, especially young girls, as part of ensuring that they live a hygienic lifestyle without hindrance of the cost of these towels. This call goes along with our call for zero-vat rating of sanitary towels as part of basic needs for women in general. The YCLSA leadership in the province sends its condolences to the families of the diseased and wish those who are still consigned in hospital beds a speedy recovery.
