Comrades, I agree with the strong views against what Cde Gwede Mantashe raised at the NUMSA mini-Congress but I do not think that makes him less of a Communist.
These are the contradictions we must manage as we are in alliance with a multi-class organisation organisation and Cde Gwede is the Secretary General and therefore the head of its organisational machinery. If you look at the six officials of the ANC only Cde Gwede is a Communist... I am sure they meet and discuss various issues and the SG must communicate the decisions of the collective - we must appreciate that he said those issues in his capacity as the SG of the ANC. I am certain that if he were to address that same Congress as National Chairperson of the Party it would be a total different story. As workers and communists we must appreciate some of the contradictions of our participation in the National Liberation Movement - the main issue is how to manage these contradictions and tension something that the previous leadership of the ANC dismally failed to do. I therefore agree with the other comrades that that comment from the ANC was out of order - workers are not to be told what to do. At the same time the ANC has a right to pronounce on any matter in the country and we have a right as COSATU and SACP to differ. Ndisatshaya, Thembela.
