A message from Cuba:

Carmen Nordelo Tejera, mother of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Hero of the
Republic of Cuba, died Monday of a lengthy illness at the age of 75 in the
capital.

Carmen Nordelo was born on Feb. 15, 1934 in the Canary Islands. At the age of
16 she emigrated to Havana for economic reasons of her family. As a homemaker
she supported the revolutionary activities of her husband and took care of the
intellectual and social development of her three children.

In an outstanding manner she participated in the Battle of Ideas carried out by
our people for truth and justice for our Five Compatriots who are unjustly
imprisoned in prisons of the Empire, until she was unable to due to health
reasons.

To Gerardo -- who is serving a sentence of two life terms plus 15 years -- and
his family, we convey our deepest felt condolences on behalf of the people of
Cuba.

Sisters and Brothers:

We extend our most profound condolences to our brother Gerardo, his wife
Adriana and their family, on the passing of his beloved mother Carmen Nordelo,
as well as to Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René; for each mother is the mother
of all the Five. When I met Carmen in Cuba, Oct. 7, 2001, with the other family
members of the Cuban Five, she proudly said of her son, "From the time he was
little, my son was always exemplary. He has always treated everyone like
family, and is concerned about everyone. He is incapable of doing even the
slightest harm to anybody."

Later, during the Five's Miami sentencing in December 2001, after her son
Gerardo received the severe and unjust sentence of two life terms, Carmen spoke
with confidence that he and his four brothers will come home. As difficult as
it was for her after the sentencing, she said, "Fidel has told us they will
return. That's why I know they will return."

Sadly, she was not able to see her son Gerardo home again in Cuba before she
passed, but her faith in Fidel's promise never wavered. That promise will
become a reality. Carmen Nordelo, Rest in peace.

As always, we in the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five will continue
the struggle until the Five Cuban Heroes are free.

A poem written by Gerardo to his mother Carmen
on her birthday, Feb. 15, 1999

 <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> Anhelo (Todo el
universo)

Tu silencio infinito y tu inmenso valor,
Y sabrás cómo ansío regresar a tu suelo,
