A REPORT on the unrest at two Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)
campuses earlier this year is set to be tabled at the university's council
meeting tomorrow.

The report was compiled by the Moerane Commission of Inquiry, chaired by
advocate Marumo Moerane SC.

It focused on the disruptions at the Bellville and Cape Town campuses between
July 30 and August 7, and also looked into the grievances that underpinned the
unrest, and the university management's response to the events.

Over the one-week period, protests took place on both campuses. Classes were
disrupted, university property was vandalised and some students were arrested,
although charges were later dropped.

Students were objecting to a council decision to increase the advance payment
for next year from R1 800 to R3 000 for students living off campus, and from R2
800 to R5 000 for those living in university residences.

Deputy registrar Nikile Ntsababa said yesterday that the commission had
conducted interviews and considered written submissions from staff members and
students.

It had concluded its work on Sunday and the report was now being printed.

"No one has received the report yet. The report will first be given to the
acting chairperson of council who will table it at the Friday, December 4,
council meeting for consideration."

Ntsababa said a new CPUT council chairperson would also be elected at the
meeting. The previous chairman, the Rev Lionel Louw, resigned in September. It
is expected that a decision on the fees for 2010 will also be made within the
next few days.
