Statement on the
Successful
29 December 2009 15h00 About 700 members of the Food and Allied Workers’ Union [FAWU] were part of the protest march that started at at 11h35 and was of a distance of 500 meters, from the gate of ABI Distribution Center to the ABI Pretoria factory main gate. At that point, the workers rallied to listen to an address by the General Secretary at 12h15. This is part of intensifying the strike at and increasing pressure on SAB’s ABI Coke management to meet workers demands for 9.5% wage increment, 45-hour working week and overtime pay, and the moratorium on and reversal of the use of labour brokers. Meanwhile, a copy of a memorandum will be sent to ABI management calling for their return to the negotiating table and for them to essentially meet noble and reasonable demands of our members. We are pleased to announce that four additional ABI plants (i.e Vaal, Bethlehem, Ladysmith and Bedfodview) have joined the strike and hope that the remaining plants (i.e Petermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Vryheid and Rustenburg) join the rest of the striking workers. If the company wants to meet the union, FAWU’s doors are always open for further engagement. Please call General Secretary Katishi Masemola on 082 467 2509 for more information.
