Zapiro or whoever his name is, is not faceless and if there is anyway legally or constitutionally, he must be charged for doing this. This is the President of the country and must be accorded the status he deserves.
During the dark days of apartheid we did not have these people cartooning the PW Bothas ,the Jimmy Krugers, the Magnus Malans who were responsible for the massacres of our black people in South Africa. President Zuma has not done anything to deserve this. The consideration of parole to prisoners is a process and it does not start with him. President Zuma is trying by all means to provide a space for democracy to work in practice in our country. We are seeing a leader who does not panic and does not bother himself with petty issues. A leader who allows collective decision making on crucial issues of public interest. The DA and Zapiro are not interested in this as they would like an autocratic ruler who has their bourgeoisie interest at heart. The Zapiros of this world are hiding behind these so called journalistic ethics to spread misinformation to the people of SA.Furthermore, creative artists use cartoons for purposes of making people laugh, jokes etc.I like reading those kind of cartoons that do not refer to any particular individual but depict a scene where people do funny things.Zapiros' obsession with President Zuma is starting to bore hence I think he needs to be called to order. I think this is the real fight that should be called by some of us in the movement, who hold media conferences and call for street fights. Long live OUR PRESIDENT LONG LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of JEFFREY NXUMALO Sent: 15 January 2010 11:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [YCLSA Discussion] [Fwd: [NUMSA Statement] NUMSA CONDEMNS ZAPIRO CARTOON] Zapiro must now and forever not hide behind the artistic profession while pushing cheap political agenda to discredit the President of the Country and ANC. Comrades we are aware of the current DA tacticts to take powers confered by the constitution to the President which is purely trying to diminish powers of the President and this is part of the campaign of DA and their cronies such as Zapiro and M&G. We will fight this senseless politics and barbaric acts to ensure the Presidential status and powers conferred are not simply diminished by political hungry monguls. Together We Will Fight Cde Jeff Nxumalo KZN >>> Dominic Tweedie <[email protected]> 2010/01/15 11:26 AM >>> NUMSA CONDEMNS ZAPIRO CARTOON 15 January 2010 The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is utterly disgusted and incensed by the Zapiro cartoon in today’s Mail & Guardian. The cartoon by Zapiro depicts the President of the Republic and of the ANC Jacob Zuma unbuckling his pants whilst Lady Justice is being held on the floor by Shabir Shaik and Eugene de Kock. Whilst Lady Justice is his target, for many the image of the woman on the ground alludes back to his charge of rape and thereby seeks to implant in the minds of the public that President Zuma is a rapist, despite being not found guilty of rape by any courts of law in the land. This venomous and personal hatred of President Zuma camouflaged as an artistic skill by Zapiro is a sign of disrespect not only to President Zuma, but to the office and the position he occupies in society as the fourth democratically elected Head of State. Whilst we respect and uphold the constitution and freedom of expression, it does not give cartoonists license to undermine the fundamental rights to dignity as guaranteed in the constitution. This cartoon is highly distasteful, deplorable and boarders on defamation of character, and is clearly intended to poison the minds of the readers and the general public against President Jacob Zuma. The depiction of our justice system to a woman who is about to be raped is grossly insensitive and reckless in the context of a rampant crisis of rape and violence against women in our country. We demand that the Mail & Guardian and Zapiro apologizes to President Jacob Zuma and refrain from reckless and offensive cartoons. We further demand that the South African Human Rights Commission takes drastic action against Zapiro in the interest of safeguarding our constitutional rights to dignity and respect.
