PHILLIP RADEBE DISTRICT

PRESS STATEMENT

On the 16th January 2010 the SACP in Phillip Radebe District (Ehlanzeni) convened an Augmented District Executive Committee (DEC) meeting at Nehawu Regional Office. The meeting was attended by directly elected members of the DEC of the 3rd District Congress, deployees of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), DEC members of our revolutionary organ, the Young Communist League (YCL) as well as branch secretaries from all branches within the district.

This meeting was preceded by the scheduled meeting of the DEC which took place on Sunday, 10 January 2010 at the same venue. These being the first activities of the year, the meeting made an assessment of the previous year, 2009 and deliberated on what would constitute the programme for the year 2010. The meeting resolved to prioritize two activities outlined below.

We were fully conscious of the significance of the month of January in the calendar of the SACP. Of course it was 15 years ago, on the 10th January 1995 to be precise when our stalwart and hero, one of our renowned revolutionary intellectual, Cde Joe Slovo passed on.

Cde Joe’s contribution in the liberation struggle is immense. He has impeccable track-record. He rose through the ranks to become the General Secretary and later the National Chairperson of the Party.

Beyond that Cde Joe was an ANC member in his own right. He served in the NEC of the ANC since 1985 following its second National Consultative Conference which redefined the movement’s character by embracing the principle of non- racialism and thus allowing whites to serve in its elected structures, he became commander of the people’s army, Umkhonto WeSizwe which earned him the title of enemy number one of the repressive Apartheid regime. Cde Slovo is one of the esteemed recipients of the highest honour in the ANC, Isithwalandwe, Seaparankoe.

Therefore in recognition of this sterling contribution, the SACP in the district will be convening two memorial lectures in honour of our fallen hero. This will be a campaign in response to the SACP’s declaration of the month of January as the JOE SLOVO MONTH. The memorial lectures will be delivered by Cde Solly Mapaila the Secretary for Organizing, Campaigns and Cadre Development, a Central Committee member.

The memorial lectures will be organized as follows:

Date                :           30 January 2010
Time               :           10h00
Venue                        :           KaMhlushwa Community Hall & Mshadza High School

In the same context we acknowledge and support the YCL’s campaign of Joe Slovo Right To Learn Campaign which among others call for the implementation of the vision of the Freedom Charter which called for Free and Compulsory education.

We will also be convening a Gala Dinner in honour of Che Guavara who guided by the revolutionary principle unselfishness and sacrifice, participated in the struggles of the toiling masses around the globe including in Africa.

The keynote address to this Gala Dinner will be delivered by the General Secretary Cde Blade Nzimande.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date                :           20 February 2010
Time               :           18h00
Venue                        :           Mbombela Civic Centre
Entrance         :           R250.00 per chair

We urge our members to attend these events in large numbers and furthermore our expectation is that the leadership and membership of the ANC and those of Cosatu, Sanco   and the broader congress movement will grace this occasion thus reaffirm the correctness of the long standing principle of dual membership which Cde Slovo practically demonstrated.

We further extend an invitation to the business and sectors of our society to attend.
