*NUMSA YOUTH DESK.*

The formation of Numsa youth desk structure is victory for young people in
metal industry .This would bring new ideas and constructive contributions in
the union movement traditionally dominated by the militant elders.

The metal industry needs a very serious transformation and over the years
the union in fact failed dismally to organize workers across the issue of
transformation. Some comrades would be surprised of the ugly things and in
particular behaviors that emulate the worst evil treatment workers
experience during apartheid era in front of Union.

It is true that white graduates are given first preference to climb to
management ladder or specialist field.

It is true that White people are given strategic technical fields as
compared to their black counter parts.

It is true that an African cannot get into the industry without
qualifications whereas the White can enter without and be given quick
promotions.

It is true that white graduate in terms of performance do well as compared
to African graduate solely because white counterparts are given every
knowledge possible to make them successful.

It is absolute truth that colored and Indians are preferred for management
and specialist positions than African.

It is once again a great truth that 99% of African metal workers are not
happy with the pace of transformation and the manner that they are treated
being in management level, specialist and technical positions.

These are some of the challenges young professionals faced in working
environment and sometimes you will be surprised how these young people move
from one corporate to another in search of better working environment.

It is indeed a hidden strategy used by corporate to ensure that there is
minimal number of African success to maintain their economic hegemony in
major corporates.

The fundamental question is where is the union in all this issues because in
advancing the objectives of NDR we need to work together as the alliance
structure to ensure that these objectives are attained. We must first ensure
that in strategic positions be in specialist field and management level
Africans in numbers occupy the space in this corporate until then we will
never and never dismantle the economic disparities.

As Cde Joshua Gumede said at annual ANC conference in 1930 that ‘we now have
to rely on our own strength . . . We have to demand our equal economic,
social and political rights. That cannot be expressed more clearly than to
demand a South African Native Republic, with equal rights for all, but free
from all foreign and local domination'".

It was also the ANCYL provisional committee in 1944 that saw this on their
manifesto “These conditions have made the African lose all faith in all talk
of Trusteeship. HE NOW ELECTS TO DETERMINE HIS FUTURE BY HIS OWN EFFORTS. He
has realized that to trust to the mere good grace of the White man will not
free him, as no nation can free an oppressed group other than that group
itself”

It is upon this that as long as the Metal industry still dominated by the
white people in all strategic positions we will fail as the Alliance to
advance the common objectives of NDR.It is high time that radical steps be
taken by the Union to transform this apartheid institutions.

You cannot put your hope on white man to train and mentor the black engineer
or artisan to be his senior at later stage.

Given this situation thousands of workers who lost their job because of the
economic downturn in the fourth quarter of 2009 are Africans you asked why
because they are not given any key skills and when things like this happen
management criteria is to keep the employees with key skills and guess what
white people has been prepared and they have that skill. These are amongst
many challenges young professionals are facing.

While the working class historic mission is ending class exploitation it
is quite clear that in South African situation the need to first transform
capitalist establishment to reflect the diversity of South Africa. The
transformational agenda in working places is an undertaking which requires
the collective efforts of all PYA structures in particular the new structure
to cxarryout this task effectively and efficiently.

In launching the Youth Desk as agreed at National Congress I hope the
following would be taken in consideration. These are great importants for
the liberation movement to quickly advance the core tasks of National
Democratic Revolution

-Youth desk as the structure to mobilize graduates from Technikon,
Universities and Technical colleges into NUMSA.

-Youth Desk to prioritize the struggle for transformation of the Metal
industry.

-Youth Desk to unite all work forces in particular the young employees
divided on the bases of income.

-Young Desk as the structure to instill ideology of workers in young
managers and specialists.

We hope that the Numsa would give Youth Desk a great role to play in the
struggle for better salaries and importantly for the transformation.

LONG LIVE THE WORKERS, AND TOILERS OF THE WORLD !!

LONG LIVE!!!
