THE Young Communist League (YCL) has called for the Department of Labour to
investigate allegations of nepotism against former Vodacom CEO Alan
Knott-Craig, describing the company as “a haven for corruption and
white-collar criminals”.
Vodacom is resisting a Labour Court subpoena to release a 2008 report by
accountants KPMG into claims by a former employee that Knott-Craig misused
his position to assist family members.
The claims showed “that corruption is all over and the private sector is
not immune to it”, the YCL said.
Spokeswoman Gugu Ndima told Business Day that the YCL would look to begin
consultations with the Department of Labour as soon as possible with a view
to a new investigation.
The KPMG report was commissioned by Vodacom’s board on behalf of
shareholders Telkom and Vodafone, following the allegations against
Knott-Craig by two former employees.
Two of the claims were found to merit further investigation, but Telkom and
Vodafone ultimately resolved to take no action against Knott-Craig.
The league also condemned Vodacom’s continuing payment of a salary to
Knott-Craig more than a year after his retirement.
Vodacom defended the agreement on Sunday, saying it was intended to prevent
Knott-Craig from assisting other telecom companies, while ensuring Vodacom
continued to benefit from his expertise.
Spokeswoman Page Boikanyo said the Department of Labour had not yet
received any communication from the YCL regarding the allegations .
