Johannesburg - The ZA Domain Name Authority (Zadna) expressed concern on Tuesday that too many South Africans register .com websites instead of .co.za websites.
"If you register a .com the money leaves the country. If you register a .co.za the money stays here," Zadna chair Hasmukh Gajjar told journalists in Johannesburg. "These issues should be widely understood and debated." It is estimated that about 90 000 South African websites are registered under the .com domain while about 540 000 are registered under the .za domain. It cost R50 per year to register a local domain and $7 to register a .com website.
